QuestionI live in Phoenix put in a midiron lawn using sod over seeded with rye... it is now
getting colder and colder with temps no higher than 65. What should I be doing
to help the rye along once the bermuda starts to die? And when should I reseed
for summer.
AnswerJust water daily until it has been mowed a few times, and give it a dose of fertilizer once the blades are about an inch long or so. That should goose it along nicely. Other than that, there's not much you can do.
And, technically speaking, the Bermuda will not die. It will go Dormant. It's similar to hibernation, only in plants.
You shouldn't need to re-seed for the Summer. The Bermuda will re-awaken, green up , and overtake the Rye. When the temperatures get above 85 next year, just hold back and don't water for about 10 days. The Rye will completely die off and the Bermuda will be just fine.
For transitioning lawns, you only need to seed once in the fall as the Bermuda goes dormant.
Good luck!
