fall planting in Wisconsin

Question
I live in La Crosse County.  I would like to plant grass seed this weekend (Oct. 25).  Is it too late and how often would I have to water it?  I bought some fertilizer and grass seed.  Will that be ok until spring if I have to wait?

Answer
It's definitely a bit late, but whether it is too late is up to mother nature.  If we have slightly warmer than average weather for the next few weeks, you'll be fine IF you water every day. If it is colder than usual, no chance.

You may want to take the approach of planting Kentucky Bluegrass heavily and just leaving it.   Much of the seed will survive the Winter and will sprout in the Spring when the soil warms. Kentucky Blue tends to be a slow grower from seed, but creates a beautiful, thick, full lawn. You'll be giving it a head start by planting now, but not expecting results until about mid-late April.

Good luck Barb.
