QuestionWhat can we add to our lawn to make it softer underfoot. It seems very hard and compact especially around the trees. We are trying to use a hand-held aerator and it is very hard to get into the soil. What do you suggest. Thank you!
AnswerThis is a much more long term project if you want it softer permanently. In that case, I'd recommend a good compost or richly organic topsoil that can be tilled several inches deep.
In the short term, just water heavily. It won't change the soil at all, but you'll be better able to push those handheld aerators into the soil while it's wet.
Good luck!
