QuestionI have found Puffball fungus in our lawn. How to treat them?
Thanks.
AnswerLate Summer to Early Fall is Puffball Season -- Phyllum Basidiomycota, home to a long list of Puffballs Fungi, found in woods, in fields and Lawns.
Young Puffballs are milky-colored domes with with short stems. Giant Puffballs -- 'Calvatia Gigantea' -- are one foot wide, sometimes bigger.
Some Puffballs are poisonous. That means you should get rid of any that appear on your Lawn. Remember, small children and pets will taste anything. Rake them vigorously, until they vanish. This is an exercise that must be monitored daily, as long as conditions remain favorable, because removing Mushrooms won't do anything to remove the vast network of underground 'mycelia' in the Soil. Raking the 'shrooms keeps spores from shooting up into the air and dispersing via the first gust of wind. At least you'll limit the numbers. Don't worry. When the weather gets really cold a few weeks from now, this problem will solve itself.
