winter prep for L.I. lawn

Question
Howdy.  I live on Long Island.  Is there a correct height to mow a lawn just before the winter?

Answer
Mowing Cool Season Grass continues to be a regular routine through the Fall.  This is PRIME Grass-growing Season in the Northeast.  Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Rye, Fescues turn up the volume when you combine moisture with Cool evenings and Warm Soil.

But as temps plummet, the Grass will slow down growth.  That means it's time to plan the final Mow of the season.  Lower the height of your mower a half-inch to a full inch for your final 2 mows.
Although I've heard some people claim you'll avoid a Fungus attack on the longer leaf tissue by mowing low, I think there are better reasons to mow low going into the shortest, coldest part of the year.  Including the effect on the Grass root system underground.  Thanks for writing.
