Question
I am going to rock hound and plant grass in my yard.  I have no weeds.  Do I need to bring in top soil or can I plant the grass seed in the newly turned up soil?  I was going to cover the seed with peat moss also.

Hey Jim- What is rock hound?
                Do you mean that you are going to go through your yard and get all the rocks out? That is what I am assuming.
                Before I begin let me tell you that I have been doing a little research and I am learning that there is something that I don't know much about and it is very important when starting a new lawn..... getting a pH test. For this I recommend you ask this same question to the long island Gardner. He seems to know way more than I do on this.I would love to tell you about it but like I said I am just learning about it too.
                Anyway to your question- I would have to say yes,you can plant on top of your old soil(depending on the pH test of course...). the important thing is that the seed is covered in the soil. If you have to turn the top few inches to do this do it, or if you want to add a few inches of top soil Do that.(I don't know how big your yard is, both of these can get pretty intense if you know what I mean) Once you take care of your soil and spread the seed,but before you water it in take some time and walk real well all over your new seed. Seriously, it wont hurt it and it will "push" it down into the top few inches and it will compact the dirt a little around it perfectly so it will help it germinate. Cover it with the peat moss and then be sure to water it perfectly according to the instructions on the bag,or just keep the soil nice and moist.
