St. Augustine grass with grassy weed in it..

Question
I live in Austin TX, have St. Augustine grass. I have been told by TruGreen Chemlawn that the grass that is growing in with it is too closely related to my St. Augustine, that they can't treat it without hurting my St. Augustine. Yay. I have been pulling and spraying for 3 weekends now and am about to let the weed grow. It has characteristics of a St. Aug - runners (thin, tough as nails) and the bristley stem of grass that comes up. Great filler, but since it's a weed, figured I'd better get rid of it.  What to do other than pulling 24/7? This is crazy.  Thanks!!!!

Answer
Did they give you a weed ID name?

The way you describe it, it simply sounds like another type of grass that is encroaching.  That said, what exactly is a weed?

A weed is nothing more than an unwanted plant.  Grass in a flower bed is a weed.  Is this plant really a weed?  That all depends on whether or not you want it or don't want it.

Unless it's really ugly and causing the neighbors to whisper whenever you walk by, I wouldn't worry too much about it.  If you do want to truly get rid of it, you'll likely need to kill off everything and start over with new sod.  Sometimes that's the only real option.

SO, just how bad do you want this stuff gone?  That's the true question here.  If it doesn't bother you, it doesn't bother me.
