QuestionI live in Syracuse New York. Is it ok to fertilize a lawn in late march when the temperature is around 30 degrees and then you get 4 inches of snow that evening?
AnswerWas it 'OK' to fertilize your Lawn this week? I'm guessing you saw a thaw, 'twas Spring, therefore fertilize, yes? Then the Cold front hit, and next morning there was a beautiful, white blanket of Sring snow.
Question is, why would you fertilize your Grass if your Soil is doing that for you?
Because healthy Soil generates all the Nitrogen your Grass needs. Overdosing with Nitrogen in a quick-fire injection is NOT good for your Grass. The reason it Greens up is because the plant is upping its output of Chlorophyll, stretching blade cells to do that. What's better for you in the morning -- getting dumped in the bathtub with a lot of ice, or a few noisy birds outside the window? Sure, you'll wake up instantly in an ice bath. But how long can you take that treatment before you get side effects?
Same with Grass.
Got Fungus?
Take it easy with the Fertilizer. If you don't use it, you'll get a strong, healthy crop of Bacteria that work according to the temperature of the Soil. When it gets warm, they make more. If it's cold, they make less. If it snows, they stop. All the time pacing the needs of your Lawn. That's where strong, healthy Grass comes from.
Just thought you should know. Thanks for writing.
