QuestionI recently removed a shelter belt of 30ft. cedar trees and I am looking at seeding some fescue into this area in the spring. Will the cedar needles and the chips from the stump grinding cause any problems for my new grass. I live in N.W. Kansas......thank you
AnswerClark:
The grass seed needs contact with the soil in order to germinate successfully. If the needles and chips are not too deep, just scarify the soil and plant. If thick enough to shade the soil, remove them.
Fresh wood chips, if too thick, will rob nitrogen from soil.
Best wishes.
