QuestionIs there anything that even resembles grass that will grow with black walnut trees in the vicinity? I reseeded our lawn 4 times before I stumbled upon black walnut toxicity information. Help!! I'm tired of looking at dirt.
AnswerSue:
The answer depends on where you live. I can answer for zone 6 and further north. Kentucky bluegrass grows underneath my black walnut just fine. however, if you live in lower zone 6 or higher, you may have trouble with that grass.
In more southerly climes, I have no idea. I have seen mixtures of grasses and "weeds" under these trees in the south, mostly in pasture settings. You might try a pasture blend for your area to see what survives. I would check with your local ag agent to see what is recommended for that use.
Best wishes.
