QuestionHi! Tom,
We live in East Texas and have Centipede grass. We have one spot that has become nothing but grass burs. When you walk through the yard it is like walking through a land mine field. You come out covered and they really hurt. I was told to try Green Light Vantage spray for Sand burs, dallis grass and bermuda. But I am having a hard time finding this product. Any held you have is greatly appreciated. It is time to spray and I most definitely want to get rid of these things.
AnswerDorothy:
The best preventative for sand spurs is a dense, healthy lawn which can crowd out that weed.
You are entering the season to apply pre-emergent herbicides which can stop the seedlings. Be careful with whatever you buy that it is compatible with the type of lawn in your yard. These are:
Surflan, PreM, Amaze (Green Light), Weed & Grass Preventer, and Wed Stoppere. If your soil temperature is 52 deg F, you can apply, usually sometime in March/April in Texas. Apply every six weeks until September.
Postemergent herbicides should contain MSMA or DMSA. DMSA can not be used on St. Augustine or centipede lawns.
Spend some time on reviving your lawn to establish a dense cover of turf and keep it mowed at proper height to avoid seeding of weeds taller than the grass.
Best wishes.
