QuestionI live in the San Fernando Valley, just north of Los Angeles and I'm putting down new Marathon II sod in my back yard. My problem is that I have one 5' wide strip of my lawn that gets less than 50% shade because it's on the north side of a high wall. Should I use Marathon on the whole lawn and overseed with a certain shade tolerant seed? If yes, what brands do you recommend. Or should I use a different type of sod in the shade that matches my Marathon II?
AnswerHi Sonya
Marathon II is our most advanced dwarf tall fescue. It retains the excellent durability of the species while enhancing its beauty. Marathon II can be mowed shorter, has greater density, and slightly narrower leaves, resulting in a more compact carpet-like appearance. The growth rate is somewhat slower, particularly in winter.
These are few properties of Marathon II. I think this variety can survive upto 50% shady area.If you find some trouble then I will suggest you to use some scott blends of grasses to mix in april. This will be good for your lawn. If you again have any query , you are welcome
