QuestionI have recently overseeded my lawn (I live in Middle TN). The new grass looks great, have cut it only once so far. My concern is that I still have alot of weeds. Is it wise to put down a weed control product this late in the year or will they die off with the cold? I did put down a "starter" fertilizer when I reseeded.
AnswerBrad:
I would not worry about the weeds until the grass has matured. Usually, a starter fertilizer contains a pre-emergent, depending on brand, which, apparently, did not work too well.
Some of the summer weeds will die in cold. Some others will survive. However, putting down an herbicide now may damage grass.
Wait until early spring and apply a pre-emergent if the weeds are still persistent. If they are still a problem in late spring, apply a postemergent herbicide.
A healthy aggressive turf will crowd out many weeds by competing for sunlight. Mowing usually takes care of many more, preventing seeding. After a year or two, you should see what weeds will survive and invade.
Best wishes.
