QuestionWe're up in the Catskill Mtns. of NY, Zone 4/5. Warmer than usual autumn, temps still seeing high 50's/low 60's daytime, down in high 30's/40's @ night. We're just finishing grading an addition. Is it too late to sow grass seed? If not, any special hints to help it in the cooler temps?
Thanks much.
Kate
AnswerKate:
The temperatures you describe are suitable for germinating grass. The question is which type of grass. If fescue, two weeks for normal germination. If bluegrass, four weeks.
Grass should do fine if it reaches two or more blades before extreme cold. Maybe a nurse crop to protect the tender grass might help. Try oats, wheat, or barley which will come up sooner and shade grass. These can be mowed as grass and will die out in summer heat.
I would check weather forecasts for your area. Try:

If that location is not close enough, put your zip code in at top of page, then click on "Ten Day" for forecast.
Best wishes.
