digging up lawn

Question
Hello, I have an area of grass that I would like to remove to make way for something else. The grass is lovely so I would like to use it to cover a bare patch elsewhere. Is there a tool I can use to lift the lawn and how would i go about it? I live in Western Australia, the grass is couch.
Thanks

Answer
Mr. Elliot:

While I have no direct experience with Australian horticulture or couch grass, I will answer your question.

It would appear that you have taken on a monumental task.  Couch grass has deep roots, six inches deep, more or less.  Normal sod cutters only take an inch or less in typical sod grasses.

Apparently, also, you will do not damage to it as it is very hardy.

My suggestion:     If you know someone with a front end loader who is gentle with hydraulic controls, scoop six in cuts with the bucket and move to the desired location.  The problem with this, or any method, is that the new area will be uneven and require filling between the patches of turf.

If a sod farmer has a special cutter for couch, you may be able to rent one.  A normal sod cutter may do the job, but I have no idea about the success of it.  Hand work will be very rigorous.

Best wishes.
