QuestionI have large patches of this in my yard and was told to either use round out or pull it out by hand. Then to aerate and reseed. Does this make sense? I live in Peoria, Illinois. Is it too late to do this? thank you for your help
AnswerDee:
Nimblewill is a mean foe. It should be dormant in your location, now. If not, use the Roundup method and reseed when a good kill is shown.
Culural mathods of favoring winter grasses are to fertilize, aerate and overseed in fall and, again in spring. Aeration may be done once per year.
Nimblewill will begin growing in late spring and stop in early fall, giving you some advantage for seasonal favoring of the winter grass. However, it is stoloniferous and will regenerate from parts of the plant left in the ground. Therefore, a good systemic like Roundup is preferred over mechanical removal.
Also, during the growing season, you may apply plastic over the weed areas to cook it out, reseeding afterward. Reseeding should be all right this time of year. Winter grasses grow all right in cold weather, just not freezing weather.
Best wishes.
