QuestionHi, I have a big pile of dirt in my backyard from the excavation of a fish pond. I have some unleveled spot in my yard and like to spread this pile of dirt over the yard to level it.
The question is, do I need to till the yard to remove the existing grass first before spreading the dirt? It's kind of late Falls now, so I'm not planning to plant any new grass.
Thanks,
Yen
AnswerDepends how much you are going to cover what's growing there now -- and Grass would not be a problem anyway.
If you're worried about Weeds, cover the plot with newspaper, then a layer of Soil as deep and even as you like. Odds are you won't have to worry about them until you Rototill them to the surface. That day may never come.
This is a good opportunity for you to improve your Soil. Blend in a substantial amount of aged Horse Manure and/or Compost and you'll be looking at black gold in the Spring, ideal for growing Grass. A soil test will give you all the information you need to fine tune your Soil for the ultimate Lawn. If you don't mind compromising, skip the Soil test and live with what you have.
Thanks for your question.
