Weak Grass

Question
Hello,
I have to tried to plant some new grass in my back yard from seed.  The yard on one side is very patchy.  There are lots of trees so there is plenty of shade so I got seed that would grow in the shade. I loosened the soil toss down the seed and   covered it with some top soil and watched it grow.  I new I would have to wait until it was 3-4 inches before cutting it.  But when it was cut the grass was so weak it laid down and never got back up. A lot of it got ripped right out of the ground!  So I reached down and gave a small patch of the grass a slight tug and it just came right up the roots seem to be right on the top of the soil.
What could be wrong, why won't the grass take?

Alfonso:

Your description of the problem sounds like the use of topsoil as a cover for the seed may have created a very loose seedbed.  Tilling the soil should be adequate preparation for seed.  The soil should be compacted slightly at seeding.

Further, if watering was done lightly and frequently, the roots have not developed deep enough to offer a good hold for the plant.

Try watering deeply and infrequently to encourage deeper root growth.  Let the grass dry out a little between waterings.

I believe, then, that it should take hold.  The leaves will stand up to reach for sunlight on their own.  Early mowing is a bit treacherous for new lawns.  Sharpen your blade like a razor at a low angle and use a low engine speed next time.  Do not be discouraged.  Just give it some time.

Best wishes.
