ADDENDUM:
I IN NO WAY INTENDED TO CHIDE YOU ABOUT WANTING A LUSH LAWN. I WAS MAKING A COMMENT ABOUT THE AMERICAN LIFESTYLE OR MISCONCEPTION OF A LIFESTYLE) AND PREFERENCE, EVEN REQUIREMENT, FOR NICE THINGS WITHOUT A HIGH INVESTMENT. I DESIRE A FINE LAWN MYSELF.
PLEASE ACCEPT MY APOLOGY FOR POOR WORDING.
Steroids are ubiquitous in plants and animals. They are fat soluble regulators determining many functions of an organism. You are already consuming steroids by eating food. Your well probably has some also. They include sterols, some of which regulate digestion and others which regulate reproduction. Though these compounds have a bad reputation via sports, I doubt that they have any deep effect on us from the environment, unless we modify the ones we consume.
Now, to the grass. If a certain steroid is eliminated from a plant, like grass, it will age differently. The leaves will always be green. It will be a dwarf. It will be sterile. From what I understand, this innovation is a ways off and must pass scientific and government review before it becomes reality.
It may be nice to have a lush, perfect lawn without mowing. But I doubt that the varieties marketed early on will produce that perfection.
Besides, I like mowing and other gardening tasks. They give me excercise, not to mention the intimate contact with my yard and nature.
Best wishes.
