QuestionI put down sod one month ago. I would like to know what fall fertilizer care I should give it (I live in NJ).
Thank you
AnswerDebbie:
I have two suggestions for you. You choose which one will suit your needs.
One - topdress with a high quality, professional grade compost at the rate of one cubic yard per thousand square feet of lawn.
Two - begin a program of multiple applications of mineral fertilizer several times a year.
One:
There are professional landscape suppliers of compost who have analysis and make the material using thermophilic methods (over 131 deg F.) If you can access one of these, use compost. It will furnish all the nutrients your lawn needs and do it for a year or longer. This can be repeated every fall.
Two:
I would apply one to one and one-half pound nitrogen per thousand square feet of lawn in October/November (or when rain begins again and temps drop), in February-March. The recommended amount is four pounds per year per thousand sq. ft., but that is the outside limit for winter grasses (fescue and bluegrass.) This may also be done at one pound per thousand more times between October and April.
Your sod should be healthy. All you have to do is maintain it.
Best wishes.
