My grass looks dead

Question
Dear Sir,

I live in Athens Greece and for five days now I face a big problem with my grass. Sprinklers water it every day during 5.00 am for about 15 minutes, and it was always very green and looked very healthy, but from previous Thursday it started to look brown and eventually it turned dead, without any specific reason. That had happened lets say in 1/3 of the grass and now continues to the other third, its like a spreading disease. I continue water it as i did every day but its appearance does not improve. What do you think is happening? Can you help me please?
Thanking you in Regards

Answer
Georgia (from Greece):

Well, this forum has constant surprises.  I will qualify my answer by saying that I have knowledge of niether the types of turf grown in Athens, unless it is in Georgia, nor the weather there.  With that in mind, I will offer an opinion from experience in the eastern US.

If watering has made no difference, then your problem may be too little water or a lawn disease or pest.  Fungi are universal and ubiquitous.  I would search there first.

Pests, I suspect, are different in that part of the world.  However, if a fungus is not causing your lawn to deteriorate, then it could be a root eating insect.

Did rain precede the downturn in health?  Were temperatures between 75 and 90 deg. F (24 - 32 C)?  If so, seek a fungus problem.

I can not direct you to sources of turf analysis, as I am unfamiliar with Greek educational system and agricultural support.

If neither if these ideas is the answer, and you have had a drought, consider lenthening the watering period to 1/2 or 3/4 hour during dry spells.  But do not water a fungus.

Your description favors a fungus.  Using a fungicide is relatively inexpensive and easy.  Try that first.

I trust that this has given a direction to follow or some help.  Best wishes.
