QuestionI live in North Georgia (Zone 7). My tall-fescue (Kentacky) lawn has patches of barren areas. Most of the lawn looks OK. I wonder if I can choose something different to mix with the existing fescue--something requiring less mowing yet looking nicer. Thank you in advance.
Answer'Something requiring less mowing' -- Aaron, Grass needs maintenance, and the most important maintenance it needs next to water is Mowing. It needs it like you need to get out of bed and move around.
If you need a less demanding Grass, I suspect Zoysia may be up your alley. It grows slow, thick, and is easycare. The only con is that it does not like the cool weather, and turns the color of straw around the end of September up here. It is last to Green up in the Summer. But mowing it is a pleasure, because you do very little of that with Zoysia.
All Cool Season and most Warm Season Grass is going to need Mowing, but Zoysia needs the least of all.
You might also consider a groundcover. Look through Bluestone Perennials website (www.bluestoneperennials.com) and see if you can find something you like more that you just have to water now and then.
Some places in Las Vegas are selling artificial Grass. It gives me the creeps, but you don't have to mow it (a life or death decision when your Summers are sitting in triple digit temps for months) and it does not need to be watered.
