QuestionI sodded my lawn with Meyer sod and while the grass is looking real good I have a problem with crabgrass and ornamental grass as well as clover. We did it on 7/1/07 and we are watering regularly due to dry hot conditions here. My question is: What can I do and when to make my lawn weed free?
AnswerAlan:
I would not worry about the weeds in the future. Zoysia has excellent coverage and competes well when mature.
It is recommended that you apply a crabgrass preventive herbicide on fall, October, and another in February. This will be a pre-emergent which should cover most annuals, including poa annua and clover.
After you begin mowing regularly in another week or so, the weed seedheads should disappear, given the short mowing height. Just be patient and allow them to grow during establishment. The only alternative would have been to gas the soil before sodding and that could have hurt establishment. This practice is not done often on grassing operations and not in residential areas.
You should have a fine lawn next year.
Best wishes.
