QuestionWe live in Denver and recently had to have a very large aspen tree removed
(including having stump ground) near our home due to storm damage. Since
then aspen shoots have sprung up everywhere in our bluegrass lawn. Any
suggestions on how to get rid of these aspen sprouts without damaging the
lawn?
AnswerBob:
Unfortunately, the sprouts are thes signs of a strong survival instinct of the aspen. They will return for some time.
To my recollection, a blend of 2-4D and another herbicide may work for this problem with a woody perennial. Check with your local ag agent to find out which one will do the job best. I have read that Dicamba, Garlon 3 and other blends of 2-4D are effective in lawns.
Another approach would be to treat with Roundup and reseed the area effected.
Treatment may take several seasons to reduce the root reserves and discourage sprouting.
