aspen roots in lawn

Question
I have about 5 aspens in a mini-grove in the middle of my lawn (about a 12' x 4' elipse).  The roots are popping out in little sections.  Those are very tough to saw/pickax down/out (takes about 45 mis) and I have about 30 of these (some large, some small).  Any solution to getting rid of thse other than sawing/digging out?  Am I doing something wrong to get these?  Would it be best to roto-till my lawn and start over?  Thanks....

Answer
Hi Sean;
Trees put out seeds that are cqarried on the wind, or just fall from the tree that is already there.
The organic program causes weeds to die out because of the rich soil it creates, but trees love rich soil, and are not weeds.
The squirrels hide their tiny pecans they gather, in my climbing rose bushes.
These trees are hard to get out, as the tap root is twice as long as what is showing above ground.
I want them out, and obviously can't dig them out without digging up my roses, so I use WipeOut put out by Green Light.
It will absorb through the leaves, stems or soil.
I dopn't want it in the soil because of my microbes, and I don't want it where my lizards that climb in my rose bushes and eat the aphids, so I mix 1 part WipeOut and 1 or 2 parts water, and throw a plastic sheet over the rose bush, then paint some of the leaves on the pecan trees with the mixture. As soon as it is dry enough not to drip and kill my rose bushes, I take the plastic sheet off, and a\wrap a plastic garbage bag arounf the part of the tree with the leaves i painted, and I clost the bag around ir vey tight so a lizard won't crawl on iut and get poisoned.
In just a couple of days the tree is dead. There s a balck stick where they tree was, and in a week or so, the feeder roots have composted, and I can just pull the dead stick out.
If you are not on an organic progrqam, and use other chemical products, then you could just spray the tree on a calm day, so the spray won't travel to some shrubs etc that you don't want killed.
If it gets on grass, it will do no damage to the grass.
The best solution since some are large, but you don't say how large, if you bought a chain saw, cut them doen very near the ground and drilled holes in the tops of the trunk and poured a mixture of 1 poart ?WipeOut and 4 or 5 parts water in the holes so it will soak down to the feeder roots.
