QuestionHow can I get rid of wire grass. I have a nice lawn with KY 31 grass, but it has wire grass in it. Can wire grass be killed and not kill the other grass I have?
AnswerMichael:
To the best of my knowledge, treatment for wiregrass will impact the KY31 because a broad spectrum herbicide will be used.
One way is to spray the wiregrass areas with Roundup in early fall, then reseed those areas when the wriegrass is dead and the soil prepared.
I did have luck using optimal maintenance practices which favor the KY31:
mow high, 3-3.5 inches, with sharp blades enery seven to ten days,
in fall, aerate, overseed, and topdress with compost (3/8" high quality) or fertilize
no fertilizer in the spring
Using these practices, wiregrass, bermuda, plantain and other weeds moved out of the lawn on their own in three years plus. The drive had to be treated for them though.
Best of luck,
Tom
