QuestionHi Tom. Thanks for volunteering. Here's my question. We have an empty lot of land in Belhaven, NC, that is right on the Pungo River. We are have some dirt poured on the lot near our bulkhead soon to replenish the erosion that has occurred.
We are considering having them put down some ferilizer and seed to promote a root system that will slow down future erosion but I don't want to waste our money. I know that this is not the ideal time to plant seed and there will be no one to water the seeds since we are 4 hours away.
Will the seeds take root eventually if we have it done now? Should we wait to have seed put down? We'd like to have everything done at once (dirt pouring, grass seeding) if possible to save money.
Thanks,
Paul
AnswerWell, what a lovely place to have!
I would contact the NC Coastal Federation in Swansboro, NC, 252-393-8185, to ask what to plant at his time of year and for long lasting effect. There is a lovely lady who is in charge of development, Sally Steele, who may be able to help.
I would topdress whatever you plant with compost:
seeding at 3/8" per thousand sq. ft.
planting with 1 " per thousand sq. ft.
Resident seeds and plants in soil already will thrive on this practice. It will ensure the best survival of any method recommended. My company had best survival rate of plantings during guarantee period for years using these methods.
All plants in coastal plain are used to summer drought. Starting now may be just a trick of choosing proper plants for summer survival. Ask Sally.
Best of luck,
Tom
