QuestionI just moved into my new home and my front yard has mostly dirt and weeds. Previous owners said grass will not grow in the front yard but I know it will. Friends at work have told me some things to try such as, Yard Lime, or just waiting till winter. Is there any way to get my yard to grow, because that dirt is hard on my 1 year olds feet. So I'm trying to get it up now, (summer time). On another note, money is tight, so if you know basically just a cheep way to do this I would be very very thankful...
AnswerYour co-workers are right. However, I do not know:
1. where you are,
2. what type of lawn you have,
3. what your goals are.
The obvious choice is to have sod installed - not cheap but effective.
Another choice is to tend what you have until fall (if you want winter grass) and treat and/or renovate then.
If you have and want summer grass, treat weeds now and overseed with your choice of turf, or renovate the whole lawn with summer turf of your choice.
Whatever your type of turf, irrigation will improve the health of what you have.
Make sure that the maintenance is appropriate for the grass type.
If you are having problems with soil, consider using a high quality compost for topdressing (making existing turf look better) of for renovation later (improving future stand.)
If you clarify your location, your goals, and type of turf, I can be more specific.
Best of luck.
