QuestionAbout a month ago I planted grass seed in my entire yard. It is now about 3" high. When do mow the grass? Also when is it okay to walk on the grass.
I noticed that there are a few patchy spots, should I reseed or is it true that mowing with help to reseed some of the patchy spots?
Thank you.
AnswerYou can mow your Grass any time this week. What kind of Grass did you plant? That will determine how low you mow.
Cool Season Grass usually does best mowed to 2 1/2 inches. Don't cut more than 1/2 inch at a time.
Patchy spots are not unusual. Sometimes Grass just takes longer to germinate in certain areas, sometimes there is uneven moisture or soil moisture retention variations, sometimes there is damping off of seed -- a Fungus that wipes out batches of Lawn, prevalent in chemically treated soils.
You can re-seed, but wait another week and see if the patches are still not growing yet. Meantime, send me a followup with your Grass name -- Bluegrass, Bahiagrass, St Augustine, etc., so we can pick the best height for mowing.
Walk as little as possible, of course. Most Grass does not like the pitterpatter of little feet, unless they're VERY small.
Thanks for writing and rsvp...
