growing grass in shady areas

Question
I live in Northeast Alabama and have very large trees in my yard.  What grass will grow in the shade around the tree but also in areas farther out but do not get much sun?

Answer
Ronald,
Creeping Red Fescue is recommended for shady spots, but I think it does not cover well enough.  There must be a blend of fescues possibly to include a bluegrass or even a summer grass for your area.  It should be found in a good garden center and touted to be for the southeast in hotter climes.  There are so many new fescue varieties that a few are meant for your spot even if it only gets a short exposure to sunlight every day.
Usually, summer grasses, bermuda, St. Augustine, and Centipede will not do well in shade. Though, from memory, I believe that Centipede can survive under trees well enough.
Centipede should be plugged now.  I believe seed can be obtained for it also, not easily.  Seed winter grasses, fescue blends, in fall when weather cools.
Best of luck.
