sod installation on berm

Question
I would like to install sod on a berm. I believe it could be sandy. How much, if any, topsoil do I need to add before laying sod on the berm and what are the required maintenance practices??

Answer
Hi Ron;
Maybe the first thing you have to consider is erosion.
Especially if there is sand, it may all run downhill when you put od and start watering.
If it is sloped, not too drastically, then it won't make much difference, unless it slopes to a driveway or patio etc.
Depending on how sandy it is, and if there is tight enough soil there now to let water soak in slowly enough to do the roots of the grass or whatever else you plant there some good.
I don't think I can answer this in just one remedy.
You need to get a shovel into the soil there and see just what you do have.
If you think erosion is going to be a problem, then you could still keep it, but you would need to think of a barrier.
A brick or rock wall, for instance. Depending on how hight it is, if you need steps to access it, steps made of the same material would add beauty to the landscape. There are many trailing low growing plants that could be planted on the wall. Ground cover roses, for instance, or trailing herbs.
I know I'm not being much help, but I am trying to get a picture of what you have, and not being able to see it, it is very hard to do.
Can you supply me with more information?
Charlotte
