Sod Question

Question
How would you use a product called Kinaff (sp?) to help with a sod installation? I have never heard of this before but it was used in some capacity by a neighbor. I don't know where to purchase it or whether it is necessary.  What are the pros and cons, please?

Answer
Texas A&M University Cooperative Extension uses this in potting mix, combined with Peat Moss (http://plantpathology.tamu.edu/Texlab/Fiber/Kenaf/ktop.html).  Kenaf is a crop cultivated in the South for food and fiers.  It is not grown as a garden ornamental.  But there are suggestions it would be a good screening plant; it looks like bamboo and grows a foot a week.

But Mississippi State University website (http://msucares.com/pubs/Variety/Kenaf/index.htm) has posted a 'Summary of Kenaf Production and Research'.  Kenaf is being tested for its use to grow Southern turfgrasses.  There are plans to cultivate this in Mississippi commercially because the outlook for it is so positive.

I don't know much more about Kenaf beyond what's published.  This is a Southeast crop -- out of my territory -- so pros and cons I can't give you.  Thanks for writing.
