QuestionThere is a plant that I think is called Zeezee, would you recommend it as a groundcover? Thanks.
AnswerThat's 'ZZ' -- short for Zamioculcas zamiifolia, a foliage plant that was named Plant of the Year in Florida in 2002. You can read about it on the University of Connecticut EEB Plant Growth Facilities website (http://florawww.eeb.uconn.edu/acc_num/198500049.html). You can't grow it as a groundcover unless you're gardening in Zones 9 or 10 -- this is a very tropical plant. Indoors, in a pot, elsewhere.
What's so outstanding about ZZ? Univ of Conn says it 'tolerates low water, low light and a degree of neglect which make it a fine houseplant.' Sounds good to me. And they didn't even mention its tolerance for DEEP SHADE -- a rare quality in plants outside of Ferns and a few weeds. Even more, this plant will actually put up with total darkness for MONTHS, according to one source. Bugs hate it, too. I confess I have not tried this gem, but as I garden in Zone 7, it won't be replacing Hostas up here any time soon.
Thanks for writing.
