QuestionTwo weeks ago I reseated an area of about 10' by 4'. I removed old soil laid down new soil and seeds. On top of seeds I laid more soil and topped it off with a nice coat of Patch master a lawn repair mix. The grass is growing great. It's about 3 inches already. My problem is that I have some patches that are a deep yellow. What did I do wrong if anything. Thank you for your help
AnswerYou put down soil, then seeds, then soil on top, then more seeds ('Patchmaster') plus mulch and fertilizer... You certainly are thorough, Tony.
There are a total of 3 different seeds -- possibly 4 different seeds -- on that different levels of soil plus sod. PLUS you have Scotts fertilizer right on top of the whole thing mixed in. The Grasses are all going to be different colors, germinating at different rates. In a week you may have even more colors going on. Eventually however it will probably even out and you'll be growing 1 perfectly lovely Grass. I have no doubt this will happen because someone who pays as much attention as you do to this stuff is going to make sure things grow smoothly.
I'll bet your car is perfectly tuned, isn't it?
I'll bet your neighbors LOVE having you around. You're on time for appointments. You measure carefully. Like clockwork. Tony, you should run for President. I'll vote for you.
Back to your question -- 'Deep Yellow' is not a color for a Lawn. It is possible that the first layer of seeds you planted (you did not mention the type of seed, but let me guess -- a blend?) -- is running out of steam getting through the upper layer of soil and then more soil and more mulch. That's a lot of work for a brand new seed.
I would not call this a Mistake. You did not do anything 'Wrong'. You were just very thorough. I think you could have done it a little simpler. You can see your Grass is 'growing great'. That's the point, isn't it? Sounds like you're doing a fine job. That Yellow color should Green up very soon. Don't worry about it. Mowing, I'm sure you've got that on the calendar exactly where it should be. The Perfect Lawn in place.
Good luck. Thanks for writing - let me know what color that Yellow is next week, OK? Pleasure meeting you, my friend.
