grass seed sown before cold spell

Question
On a warm day in  mid March, I planted 20 lbs of Scotts grass seed. Shortly thereafter, we had about three weeks of very cold weather.  No new grass as been detected as of today 4/30/07.  Did the cold weather kill the seed or just slow it down?  or is it un-related?

Answer
Hi Pat;
Depends on how cold it got. It may have killed the seeds, and it may have just slowed it down.
I don't have a lot of experience with grass seed. The birds always ate most of it, so for the last 40+ years, I have just put down sod.
We have had such a crazy year so far, with it turning cold, then hot.
I live in the Dallas area, and it has been down in the 40s and 50s one day, and in the 80s the next.
We are used to crazy weather here, but this has been extreme even for North Texas.
If you have had a couple of worm weeks, and no grass seed has emerged, I would be very concerned.
I do know that different grasses need different temps to germinate seeds. Check with local nurserymen to find out if what you planted should be coming up now.
Sorry I can't help you more, but you might want to consider putting down some sod pieces to start filling in the lawn, just in case your grass doesn't come up.
