how do I get rid of onion weeds?

Question
Hi,
There is some sort of weed in my front lawn that looks like green onions sprouts. If I follow your organic lawn care tips and the lawn becomes healthy, will it starve these weeds or do I need to pick them out by hand?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Kate;
I used to get wild onions in my yard. I haven't had them since years before I started the organics, so I don't know if they will go the way of the other weeds.
Those could also be wild Jonquils, or irises, or wild Hiacynths.
If they are, they may just stay, although my wild violets went, and I really wanted to keep them.
The organics don't starve the weeds, rather they feed them too much. Weeds like poor soil and will not survive in rich soil. It is the richness of the soil that drives them out.
If they are going to be done away with when they soil is enriched, you should see them start to go die out or show signs of it within a matter of 2 to 4 weeks.
If they are satill thriving after that, you may have to pull them out.
The trees that the wind and birds seed ibnto you lawn will still thrive. Trees love rich soil, and although we consider those unwanted trees weeds, they are not really.
So those still have to be removed.
The stuff that NOBODY grows, dandelions, crabgrass, etc, is what the organics drive out.
It did get rid of the clover in my yard too, but clover is a feed crop that people can grow in poor soil that will not grow much of anything else.
Wait a bit and see what those onion-like plants do. They may bloom and be something you really want to keep there.
They could even be Hiacynths that your dad planted, putting them in, in what is called a naturizing manner. Planting them so they come up in the grass, in the spring, like a wild flower meadow.
