does the sugar attract ants in the grass?

Question
Does sugar attract ants when using in to fertilize? I have a lot of fire ants here in the south.

Answer
Hi Kelly;
the sugar doesn't attract anything, because you water it in.
The best remedy for fire ants is orange oil. That is the main ingredient in all the effective fire ant control products, them they put a lot of poison junk that is not needed in there.
You can either peel oranges and chop the peels small and scatter them over the yard, or grind up the peels in a food processor, and add the peel of about 2 large or 3 medium to small oranges, to about 1 gallon Epsom Salts, mix well and store in a GLASs jar tightly closed, overnight, then mix well again, and if the oil is distrubted all through the Salts, broadcast that over they yard.
When you are on a good organic program for a couple of years, and have raised a good herd of lizards, toads and grass snakes, they will eat all the ants that come on your lawn, including the fire ants.
I used the orange peels in early spring when fire ants start to swarm, for 2 years, and then I stopped seeing any in my yard at all.
I live in the Dallas area, and fire anta are a big problem here.
Sugar doesn't fertilize.
All it does is nourish the beneficial microbes. THEY do the work enriching your soil.
