QuestionIt looks like this big yellow mushroom, but if you touch it, it's wet and sticky, about a foot long, blooming from under my cactus. Do you have any idea what it is. Almost like a pollen tube.
AnswerHi Terry;
Well, the web won't give me information and/or pictures of diseases on century plants.
That sounds like a fungus to me.
If you are following an organic lawn care program, disolve about 3 or 4 Tablespoons baking soda per 2 gallons of water and spray that yellow stuff.
If it is a fungus, it will start to kill it.
If nothing has happened to it in a couple of days, it is probably sap from th plant.
Examine the plant for cuts or breaks near where the yellow stuff seems to be coming out.
Agricultural corn meal is another organic fungicide. You could put about a cupful in a couple of gallons of water, let it set for a few hours, and saturate the yellow mass with it.
Using either of those should show a change in the yellow blob by the next day, if not before.
If it isn't a fungus, and not sap coming out, I don't know what else it could be.
It could be an insect inside the plant eating, and causing sap to drain out.
Better ask the nursery where you got it, or a nursery in your area that carries them. They may know what it is.
I searched all over the web, and looked at dozens of sites on century plants, but couldn't find a thing related to diseases or fungii of the plant.
I was surprised. I can usually find it in just a few minutes or at least in a couple of hours, but this time, the old web is not forthcoming with information.
Sorry I couldn't help more.
