Tall Fescue lawn invader

Question
My beautiful green lawn is being marred by patches of some running type of grass that seems to be Bermuda but I am not completely sure.  The main lawn is "Rebel Supreme Super-Blend Tall Fescue Grass".  What can I do to eliminate the invader?   Thanks!  Felicia.

Answer
Bermudagrass can be a lovely lawn.  But when it gets out of control, watch out!

The ONLY way to get rid of it is by annihilating the rest of your lawn along with the Bermuda.  It might not even work the first time -- you'd have to do it a second time.  And a third time.  Yikes!

Although many landscapers just love to use RoundUp for this kind of problem, it would not be an option for an Intelligent Gardener.

RoundUp is awful.  Ask and I'll give you the rundown, or you can look over previous questions here and find out exactly what I think about RoundUp.

Slash and burn seems like a saner option.  Most communities prohibit it, and it's not like you can do it secretly, but it would be a good thing to do here.

Otherwise, a nice earth-friendly Solarization project would be the perfect solution.  Water thoroughly and then cover our Bermuda'd lawn with sheets of clear plastic in the summer.  After a few weeks, the grass should be completely dead.  Remove and start over with sod or seed.

Black plastic is often used for this.  It blocks sunlight and the grass underneath dies from lack of light.

Good luck.  Keep me posted.
