QuestionIt is spring (almost) and the grass is green (soon) and it is time to buy a new lawnmower.
You seem to have opinions on lawn related questions so I hope you will be able to set me straight on my lawnmower purchase.
Is there one you think is better or is this out of your area of expertise? Just let me know.
AnswerThe Outdoor Power Equipment Institute says the average life expectance of a power mower is about 6 years.
But unless you have a large amount of lawn, I still say the best thing is a hand push rotary lawnmower.
The Clean Air Gardening internet lawnmower retailer sells my favorite mower, the German-made Brill(http://cleanairgardening.com/). This is a precision lawnmower that works like a charm and slices grass with razor-sharp speed. Blades need sharpening every 5 years. And it will cut down to less than a half inch - critical if you are growing Bent Grass for golf putting.

Another Brill fan has posted a website called Reelmowerguide (http://www.reelmowerguide.com/brill_luxus_38_reel_mower.html) where he sings the praises of these mechanical wonders: "Brill reel lawn mowers have several cool feature that set them apart from most other reel mower models. They have a powder coat paint job. You can read about the advantages of powder coating versus plain old paint here.
Brill reel mowers have sealed bearings. That means you don't have to mess with constantly oiling them, etc.
Brill reel mowers have flame hardened, welded steel blades. This flamed hardened steel, combined with the non-contact silent cut design, means that you pretty much never have to sharpen the blades. You just have to adjust them."
There is nothing more simple than mowing your grass with a push mower. The more I use mine, the more I love it. Everyone should have one of these in their garage.
