burrowing pests

Question
I recently moved fom Tampa to Dade City, Fl. This property has some kind of burrowing pest. Not sure if its a mole, because it hasn't left any running tunnels. It just makes large piles of dirt. (About 8-12" high by 12-14" diameter. If you shovel off the dirt there's a tunnel about 4-5" in diameter. Two questions:
1) What is it?
2) How can I get rid of it?
Thanks,
Bil

Answer
Hi Bil;
Don't know what it is, but if it be a lil fur-bearing critter like a mole, gopher etc, sprinkle ceyenne pepper down in that tunnel, and it will move somewhere else.
If it digs another place in your yard, put the pepper down there, it will ppretty soon give up on your yard and move elsewhere.
There are moles, voles, gophers, prairie dogs, and a few other lil burrowing critters. I have been fortunate enough to never have any of them in my yard, so I don't know what there holes look like, except the prairie dogs homes.
Ceyenne pepper, is what I am told, but I guess those hot pepper seeds that you buy in the spice sections, and that you sprinkle on pizzas would work. If you put some of those in a bird feeder with the seeds, it will not annoy or harm the birds. They will probably eat those seeds too, but it will sure keep the squirrels out of your bird feeders.
