QuestionI don't know if this is your area of expertise but I have been trying to figure out a way to grow pots of spring bulbs without the pots cracking before I even get them outside. For years I had 2 systems. One with plugning pots in the ground with the bulbs and keeping them there all winter (the pots always cracked). The other with the pots out of the ground in the garage (the pots also cracked). Before this I had regular plastic pots that I saved from shrubbery or perennials that I bought and I would put Hyacinths in there, this way always worked but it was too much work. How can we get the pots to stop cracking and breaking?
AnswerThe secret for keeping those pots outside: Paint them inside with Tar. It keeps them watertight and you don't end up with freeze/thaw, which cracks them.
I had a friend whose husband was a landscape architect. He did this all the time for his clients.
I have done what you did w/ Hyacinths and I think it's a great project. These are hard to work into the garden plan. But the fragrance is incredible and they are perfect in pots. To keep them from freezing, though, I think it is best to move the pots to a protected area - the pots may not break, but the Hyacinths have a better survival rate that way. Just because they're hardy doesn't mean they can freeze.
Thanks for asking.
