winter grass watering

Question
I live in southern california but in a high desert altitude.  In summer the temp can get to 115 degrees but in winter it can be as low as 15 degrees but really on an average of 30 for an overnight low.  Is it important to water my grass in the winter when it is so cold?

Answer
Hi Rita;
If you get at least one good soaking rain per month in the dormant season, and the ground doesn't get parched from lack of water, then you probably don't need to water in the winter.
It being cold won't hurt.
In fact, where you have a light freeze and the grass is still green, it will be damaged less by watering just before the freeze. The little layer of ice crystals hepls insulate the ground and actually gives the roots some protection.
If you have a lof of drainage in your soil, and it dries out down to the roots, then a watering will help.
Grass and plants need water during their dormant seasns, just not as much.
