QuestionThanks Charlotte for the quick response
Pardon my ignorance, but I am not familiar with organics. Where can I go to learn about such a program?

-----Question-----
I live in the Piedmont section of South Carolina. I have an established Centipede Lawn with spot patches of White Clover and Crabgrass appearing. What is the best Herbicide to use for eliminating both the Clover and the Crabgrass. It may well be two separate Herbicides. Thanks in advance for any help.
-----Answer-----
Hi Sam;
I don't use herbicides or any other poisons.
I am on an organic program, and organics enrich the soil on an ongoing basis, and weeds like poor soil and will not grow in rich soil.
I have been on the organics for almost 10 years now, and have ben totally weed free for about the last 8 years. None at all even come up.
Before, when I was battling to try and have a lawn using the normal chemical programs, I had clover, crabgrass, johnson grass, dandelions, chickweed, dollar weed and some I was never able to identify.
When I started the organics program, the weeds started disappearing, and fewer came up each year, until about the 3rd year, none came up at all, and have not come up since.
I live in North Texas, where every kind of weed known to man grows, and they come up in neighborhood lawns, but not in mine.

AnswerHi Sam;
Read some of my pat answers.
I started out with sugar, and that was all I used until this last spring, when I heard about alfalfa meal and lava sand. So I started doing some of that.
Sugar feeds the beneficial microbes that enrich your soil.
Those little critters work round the clok enriching and improving.
I put 1 pound per about 300 sqft of soil, just broadcast it by hand and them water it in well.
After I put down the first application and watered it in, some weeds started disappearing in about 2 weeks, and after a couple more mowings I could hardly see a weed.
I did it in the spring feeding time, and again in the fall. the next spring fewer weeds came up, and started dieing our right away.
My husband mows and leaves the clippings. so the weeds got chopped up and added to that.
Let the dead weeds add food for the grass.
Seems only peotic justice to me.
Lava sand just sprinkled lightly over the soil helps.
Lava sand has tons of nutrients in it, so does alfalfa meal.
I have to go to a feed store to get alfalfa meal, but I get lava sand at the nurseries and even Walmart.
A good watering program is a must.
I always water to a depth of at least 6 inches, and water only once a week, except when out weather goes over 100 for several days.
That encourages a dee root system, and a deep root system protects against heat, cold and drought damage, and prevents thatch.
Right now, if you go out and throw sugar all over your lawn. Grass, garden and everything, and water it in well. The weeds should start gowing away in a couple of weeks.
When I saw all those weedfs going away, I paniced and ran out and applied sugar again.
I don't know if that would have been necessary, but I did it.LOL
It certainly doesn't hurt it at all.
If you spill a lot of sugar in one spot, there is no burning like with fertilizer, it just wastes a little sugar.
The organic enviornment is safe for other beneficial insects and critters like toads, lizards, and grass snakes, and they eat all the bad bugs.
For every harmful insect that will come to your lawn, there are hundreds that feed on them, but the chimicals kill them, and it takes longer for them to re-establish that it takes for more bad ones to reinfest your lawn.
I have a lof of toads., lizards etc, and no grubs, snails, slugs, aphids and all those pests I used to try and battle.
Read some of my poast answers, and then ask anyquestions you have, and I will address them.
There is also a website that I like. That is where I am finding out all this new stuff. It is mostly directed toward Texas gardeners, but you just apply the same things all over. It is www.dirtdoctor.com
I paid a subscription fee of about $25.oo, and that allowsd me full access to the newsletter, email magazine and snail mail magazine, and to access the forums, and view all the videos about organic methods, they have on the site.
WELL worth the 25 bucks.
I am always happy to answer questions on organics.
