QuestionI had to excavate and repair drainage pipe, leaving about 2000 sq. ft. of bare ground with some slope, all facing south. It's now mid December in Connecticut. Should I plant grass seed now and cover with straw? Is there a certain procedure to follow? Or, what's the best way to conserve the area over the winter and have healthy grass in the spring?
AnswerI regret seeing this question so late. So I am answering it 'in principal' since you most likely went ahead and sowed.
On that note, if you did sow the seed and cover w/ straw, it would usually germinate beautifully. That kind of late "dormant seeding" in late October through December germinates early the next spring.
However, given the slope and the possibility of erosion, over several months, dormant seeding would be risky. I would wait until spring for this project.
Keep me posted, please.
