difficulty planting seed

Question
i've got a big bald spot in my backyard about 12x4 ft.  i've added some
new soild, loosened it it, raked it, and prepared the soil for the
seed.  i've thrown seed and patted the soild gently to ensure contact with
the soil, but the seed won't grow.   i've thrown seed 3 times now.  my
neighbor has a bald spot about the same size.  he threw seed 6 days
ago, and now his grass is coming out and i've still got the bald spot.
help!  i watered gently and done most everything i know to do.  i live in
the midwest. thanks

Answer
Some grass types can take 21-30 days to germinate (sprout) especially in cool soil. Normally I recommend sowing grass seeds in late summer/early fall so the soil temperatures are still warm while the cool fall temperatures will give the grass a chance to establish itself.

Some grass types, perennial ryegrass is one, germinate faster in 7-14 days.

Make sure you keep the soil damp at all times. Provided you have used fresh seeds, they should germinate in time.

Your soil preparation was very good.
