QuestionYou mentioned you spread compost on your lawn in the spring. I am going to do that this next spring. I don't make my own but can get 2 year old leaf mold compost from a place that handles organic fertilizers, dried mollasses, etc. I have a large area of St. Augustine and think I will get the compost in bulk a spread it lightly over the grass (not the centipede grass in opther areas). How much compost do you apply? I don't want to kill the grass.
AnswerHi Rod;
Just a light covering of it, not enough to cover the blades of grass. Maybe about 1/2 inch. I would just strew it by hand.
Put the compost, then dry molasses at the rate of 10 pounds per 1000 sq.ft, or plain white table sugar at the rate of 4 pounds per 1000 sq.ft.Water it, and you are set for the wintering over period.
The sugar or dry molasses will nourish the beneficial microbes that will work all year round, enriching the soil.
Those microbes will also start that compost working good.
