mixing of grass

Question
I have kentucky blue grass in my lawn but it is very thin and spotty, can mix or seed it with bermuda grass?

Answer
Bermuda grass is famous for its solo act.  Most turf specialists insist that it does best when it is not mixed with any other grasses.

In fact, they often warn homeowners not to mix common Bermuda with hybrid Bermuda.  Funny looking patches will result for those who ignore this advice.

To mix with Kentucky Bluegrass, Tall Fescue (Festuca arundinacea) is often the grass of choice.  The most recent introductions are know for their delicate, fine blades.

It has a growth habit that tends to clump, this is the most heat- and drought-tolerant of all the cold-season grasses.  And it does have a tendency sometimes to recover much more slowly than other grasses in the spring.

But there are so many pluses with this grass, you may find in fact that one of the thinner bladed recent cultivars is preferable to high maintenance, fussy Kentucky Bluegrass, which doesn't seem to be doing so well anyway.

One of my favorite grass suppliers is Seedland.com (www.seedland.com).  They offer many of the most recently introduced cultivars, meaning you'd be growing state of the art grass with cutting edge genes developed in America's great grass laboratories.  And I'm not kidding here.  There's LOTS of bucks spend researching things like drought tolerance, resistance to disease, and that beautiful green color.  Americans LOVE their lawns.

Thanks for writing.  Any questions?
