QuestionI live in NE ohio and my renovated lawn is in and germinated. Growing nicely. At what point should I rake up the straw cover? I will will need to over seed a few spots to fill in.
Thanks ,
Rick
AnswerRick, there is absolutely no reason to remove the straw cover - it sounds like you have top dressed with just the right amount, enough to protect the grass seed, but not too much to bury it and interfere with germination.
The straw will disintegrate on its own. This is a terrific mulch material and as we know we don't lift mulch, we keep it there to enrich the growing medium.
The straw, along with grass clippings, is a wonderful soil amendment. Let your lawnmower blades chew it up and spit it out. Same routine with any bare spots that are less than perfect.
Great season to sow a lawn. Perfect timing, Rick.
