I live in south western Ontario Canada (London area) and have weeds in new sod

Question
I had sod put down 3 weeks ago.  It seems to have taken well however, in areas where the seams didn't get put tightly together the weeds are going crazy, crab grass, dandilions and clover. Since I was on vacation when the work was done I'm assuming no precare was done, just some soil for leveling and that is all.  Please tell me what to use and how soon I can spray to get rid of these weeds.

Thanking you in advance
Marlen Dargavel

Answer
Marlen, I don't know why people think you should just spray this and that all over the place to get rid of weeds.

You have sod, put down some black plastic over the places where you have weeds or just yank them out and sow your grass.

Who did that work?  You should make them fix it.  This is outrageous.

White Clover by the way is very good for your lawn.  It fixes so much Nitrogen you don't really need to put any fertilizer down if you have a good mix of White Clover in the lawn.

The Dandelions are perennials.  Yank them up by the roots, get the whole tuber all the way down, it can be 2 or 3 feet long so don't miss any pieces.  Crabgrass might be an annual, don't worry about it, and do not spray anything with a skull and bones on it.

No precare?  Excuse me while I cry.  How can you let them get away with that?  I can't believe how these places stay in business.

Sod is costly.  You should get a partial refund for all the extra work you have to do to correct the sloppy job that was done.  I am not kidding here.

Of course, they are probably peddling their lawn care program to solve all these problems for a modest monthly fee.

We don't know what's under that sod, but if it was not prepared correctly, it will never grow into a healthy, thick lawn.  Because the grass still needs something to grow on; if the soil isn't well drained and rich, it can't be in tiptop shape.  Spray or dust with chemicals and you will be destroying the microbial life in the soil that forms the basis for the Nitrogen cycle.  And that's how good grass grows.

I'm not optimistic here, because I have a feeling this answer is going to be totally out of left field here for you, but I am keeping my fingers crossed and would love to hear from you again.  Please keep me posted on how things are going, Marlen.
